Thailand for Families
Connecting rooms · short drives · pool every second night
The mistake most family itineraries make is treating children as small adults: the same route, slower. These are different routes — shorter drives, fewer temples, a pool every second day, and a beach at the end with no early starts.
Thailand family tours are built around four rules: drives under three hours, connecting rooms, one pool day in every three, and a beach at the end. Family packages start at $2,950 per person for 12 days, and child seats, cots and a fridge in the car are included free.
Children remember the longtail boat, the elephants and the hotel pool. They do not remember the fourth wat. We cut temples aggressively and replace them with a market, a boat or an afternoon off.
Three hours is the threshold where a good day becomes a bad one. Bangkok to Hua Hin is 3; Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a flight, not a drive; Kanchanaburi is 2.5.
It costs a little more and it is the difference between a holiday and a week of going to bed at 20:30. We confirm connecting rooms at booking, not on arrival.
Not every night — that turns the trip into a resort stay. But every second, so there is something to look forward to after a morning of being dragged around.
| Route | Days | Best for | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok · Kanchanaburi · Hua Hin | 12 | Ages 4–12 | $2,950 |
| Bangkok & Pattaya | 5 | Short break, ages 5+ | $980 |
| Bangkok · Chiang Mai · Phuket | 10 | Ages 8+ | $2,480 |
| Pattaya beach break | 4 | Toddlers | $760 |
Child seats, boosters, cots and connecting-room requests. Children under 4 usually stay free in the parents' room with breakfast; 4–11 pay roughly 60% of the adult rate.

Hard: the heat between 11:00 and 15:00, street food with fussy eaters, and long-tail boats with a toddler who will not wear a life jacket.
Easier: restaurants — Thai food is mild if you ask, and every kitchen will do plain rice and grilled chicken. Pharmacies. Transport — a private car means the nap happens in the car rather than being skipped.
Four to twelve. Under four, cut the itinerary in half and pick one beach base plus Bangkok. Over twelve, the Classic journey works and they will remember the temples.
We check for pool fencing, balcony rails and shallow sections. If a hotel has an unguarded rooftop pool, we do not book it for families with under-fives.
At most resorts, yes — booked through the hotel and vetted by them, $12–18 an hour with a day's notice.
Free, but must be requested so the right vehicle is assigned. Thai law does not require them; we use them anyway.
Drives, room configuration and pace all change with the ages — we plan from that.
