Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai tours & day trips

Northern Thailand is where our guides actually live. Doi Inthanon before sunrise, elephant sanctuaries that do not ride, Chiang Rai's white temple in a single day, and cooking mornings in a village kitchen — all private, all operated by us.

The short answer

Chiang Mai day trips start at $68 per person and run to $125 for the long Chiang Rai day. The signature trips are Doi Inthanon before sunrise, an observation-only elephant sanctuary, and the White Temple. November to February is the right window; March and April are the burning season.

Day trips

One day, one direction

Chiang Mai traffic is not the problem people expect — the problem is trying to see Doi Inthanon and Chiang Rai on the same day. Each of these goes one way, properly.

What a day actually looks like

Why we start at 04:30, and why we tell you not to

Doi Inthanon is 2,565 metres above sea level, and the cloud sea that everyone photographs only exists in the ninety minutes after sunrise. Leave Chiang Mai at 05:30 and you arrive to a car park of minibuses and a view that is already grey. Leave at 04:30 in a private car and you are standing above the clouds with twenty other people instead of two hundred.

That is the whole argument for a private guide in the north. Not the vehicle — the timing. The same logic applies everywhere in this province: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is empty before 08:00 and unbearable by 10:00; the elephant sanctuaries that treat animals properly cap visitor numbers and sell out weeks ahead; Mae Kampong's market only has the good produce in the morning.

So the itineraries below are built around hours, not just places. Your guide has authority to change the order on the day — if the mountain is clouded in we go to the waterfalls first and come back, and you are not charged for the decision.

Where we go, and how far it is

  • Old City & Doi Suthep — 20–40 minutes. The temple runs; half day is enough.
  • Doi Inthanon — 2 hours each way. Full day, and a 04:30 start if you want the sunrise.
  • Mae Wang & Mae Kampong — 1–1.5 hours. Elephant sanctuaries, village kitchens, waterfall walks.
  • Chiang Rai — 3 hours each way. A genuine 13-hour day; worth a night if you have it.
  • Pai — 3 hours of hairpins. Only by private car, and not for anyone prone to motion sickness.

When to come

November to February is the cool, clear window — mornings on the mountain hover around 8°C, which surprises people who packed for the beach. March and April are hot and hazy: the burning season can cut visibility for weeks, so we move walking days earlier and add indoor cooking sessions. June to October is green and quiet, with afternoon rain that rarely lasts more than an hour.

Pickup, and what we need from you

We collect from any hotel inside the Chiang Mai city ring, including the old town and the Nimman area. Outside the ring — Mae Rim resorts, Hang Dong, the airport — is a small supplement we quote before you book. Tell us the hotel at enquiry stage rather than on the day; it changes the departure time.

Practical, before you book

Park entrance fees are included in every day trip on this page. Temples require shoulders and knees covered — we carry spare wraps in the car. The elephant sanctuary does not allow riding, and we do not book the ones that do.

Questions

Chiang Mai, answered

How many days do I need in Chiang Mai?

Three full days covers the old city, Doi Suthep, one mountain day and one sanctuary or cooking morning. Four to five lets you add Chiang Rai without turning it into a 13-hour dash. Two days is enough only if you pick one direction and skip the rest.

Is the elephant sanctuary ethical?

We only book sanctuaries that are observation-only: no riding, no bullhooks, no bathing shows for crowds. Groups are capped, and the animals are rescued rather than bred for tourism. We have worked with the same operator for nine years and visit them twice a year.

Can I do Doi Inthanon and Chiang Rai in one day?

No — they are in opposite directions, roughly five hours of driving between them. Anyone offering both in one day is selling you a coach window. Pick one, or take two days.

Do your guides live in Chiang Mai?

Yes. Three of our guides are northerners based in the city, not staff flown up from Bangkok. It matters on the mountain roads and in the village kitchens.

What is the pickup area?

Any hotel inside the Chiang Mai city ring. Mae Rim, Hang Dong and airport hotels are a small supplement, quoted in advance. We confirm the exact pickup time the evening before.

Are the day trips private or shared?

All four day trips on this page are private by default — your own car, driver and guide. Shared departures exist for the sanctuary and Doi Inthanon at roughly 30% less; ask and we will quote both.

Can we combine Chiang Mai with Bangkok or the islands?

That is what most people do. Chiang Mai works as days 4–7 of a ten-day trip; the Classic Thailand Journey does exactly that, with a domestic flight down to Phuket at the end.

Tell us your dates in the north.

We will tell you honestly whether the sunrise is worth the 04:30 start for your dates, and what it costs.
