The Golden Triangle and the Mekong
The point where the Ruak river meets the Mekong, and Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet in the water. It is a viewpoint, a boat, and — if you want it — the best museum in northern Thailand.
What the Golden Triangle actually is
Honestly: a viewpoint. You stand at Sop Ruak, look at three countries, and take the photograph. That takes twenty minutes, and if that is all you do, you have driven two hours for a photo. What makes the day is what sits around it.
From Sop Ruak a longtail crosses to Don Sao, a small island on the Lao side where you can land without a visa or a stamp and buy whisky and silk at prices that are, mostly, a performance. Then back for the Hall of Opium, a museum built with royal patronage that covers the history of the trade properly and does not flinch — two hours, air-conditioned, and the reason we schedule the afternoon indoors.
The route north
We drive up through Chiang Saen, an older capital than Chiang Mai, with a riverside wall and two restored temples most people skip. Then Mae Sai on the Myanmar border, where the market sells Chinese electronics and Burmese jade and the queue at immigration is not your problem — you stay on the Thai side.
Is it worth the drive from Chiang Mai?
As a day trip from Chiang Mai, no: six hours in the car for four hours there. As a day from Chiang Rai, which is where you should be sleeping if you want to see the north properly, yes.

Before you book
Do I need a visa to land on Don Sao?
No. Don Sao is a designated Lao market island where day visitors land without a visa or an entry stamp. Bring your passport anyway — it is occasionally checked, and you cannot re-enter Thailand without it.
Is the Hall of Opium suitable for children?
From about twelve. The museum is frank about addiction and includes photographs of users; there is nothing gratuitous, but it is not a light exhibit. Younger children do better with the Chiang Saen temples and a longer boat stop.
Can we see Myanmar from the Thai side?
Yes, at Mae Sai the border bridge is right there and you can walk to the middle of it. Crossing into Tachileik needs a border pass and half a day; we do not recommend it and we do not arrange it.
How long is the drive from Chiang Rai?
About 75 minutes to Chiang Saen, then 25 to Sop Ruak. The road is good and the scenery is tea terraces most of the way.
