Chao Phraya dinner cruise

Two hours on the river with the temples lit up, dinner served at your table. It is a tourist experience and it is also genuinely lovely — the trick is picking the right boat and the right deck.

Choosing a boat

They are not the same experience

There are perhaps fifteen dinner boats on the Chao Phraya and they range from a converted rice barge to a three-deck glass-sided restaurant. All of them show you Wat Arun lit up. What differs is the food, the noise, and whether you can hear the person across the table.

Big buffet boats — 200 to 500 guests, live band, seafood buffet. Fun, loud, and the food is quantity over precision. Best for groups and families with teenagers.

Premium boats — 80 to 150 guests, set menu or smaller buffet, upper deck with open air. Quieter, better food, roughly double the price. Best for couples.

Converted barges — 30 to 60 guests, traditional Thai set menu, no band. The most pleasant if you want conversation; the least impressive if you want spectacle.

Upper deck or lower?

Upper. Always. The lower deck is air-conditioned and you watch the city through a window; the upper deck is open air with the breeze and an unobstructed view of the temples as you pass. It costs $8–12 more and it is the entire point of being on a boat.

Boarding is the hard part

Most boats leave from ICONSIAM pier or River City at 19:30–20:00, and boarding closes 15 minutes before. Traffic to ICONSIAM between 18:00 and 19:00 is genuinely bad — take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and the free shuttle boat instead, or book the transfer.

Honest notes

What it is, and is not

It is not a romantic private charter — you will share the boat with a hundred people. It is also not a rip-off: two hours on the water, a decent meal and the best night view in Bangkok for $45 is fair value.

What makes it worth doing is timing. Go in the first half of your trip, not the last, because the river at night reorganises how you understand the city. And check whether your boat passes Wat Arun before or after dinner — a few routes turn around early and miss it.

Is there a dress code?

Smart casual. No swimwear, no tank tops on the premium boats. Nobody enforces a jacket.

Can vegetarians be catered for?

Yes on all boats with notice. The buffet boats have vegetarian dishes but they sit next to the meat — tell us and we will request a separate plate.

What happens if it rains?

The big boats have covered upper decks and run anyway. Barges may cancel; you get a full refund or a move to the next night.

Is it suitable for young children?

Yes — it is one of the easier evenings in Bangkok with children, because they are contained and entertained. Bring a light layer; the river breeze is cool after 21:00.

Which boat suits you?

Tell us the date and whether you want quiet or spectacle — we will pick the right one.
